CHAPTER 13

There was no escape.

I didn’t realize my savior had stalked up to me until his hand curled around my bicep.

“We need to talk,” he continued darkly.

The harsh tone skittered along my skin, and I shivered in a not altogether uncomfortable way.

The connection between us was no longer dead. It flared to life in a blaze of sparks and heat until his emotions nearly overwhelmed me. I was aware of not only his body but his mind as well. His thoughts became my own—all his frustration, his confusion, his fury.

The sheer scope of him bombarded me, and I nearly swallowed my tongue before he shut it down. His walls rose, and the connection went black again. If he hadn’t been holding me, I might have fallen backward.

“There is nothing to say. Right now, you’re manhandling Mr. Connolly’s personal server,” I replied in an equally harsh whisper. “I have to get downstairs and fix my shoe. I… broke it.”

Wow, talk much?

Not around him, apparently. I was back to acting like a foolish pup the second he met my gaze, which wasn’t smart on the best of days. Now? When I needed to be smart?

Even worse timing.

“What are you doing here?” he continued as though he hadn’t heard me.

“Can’t you see from the outfit?” I tugged against his hold until he had no choice but to loosen his grip. “Clearly, I’m working. What does it look like I’m doing?” I retorted. “This is my job.”

We glared at each other, but I refused to back down under the weight of his gaze. Eventually, he growled and yanked me nearly off my feet to get me closer to him. It was the most we’d said to each other in five years—because he’d kept his distance and I couldn’t find him, but still—and every bit of feeling came rushing back.

It was the angriest reunion I’d had in my life, and I couldn't say I was angry.

“We’re alone. Now, tell me what the fuck you’re doing here,” he growled. “I know it’s not just for work. That is too big of a coincidence for me to believe.”

Sure, I’d traded the little black dress and blue corset for something a hair more revealing. The servers weren’t required to wear heels, but the ankle boots I had on weren’t much better, only covering a bit more of my foot, but they boasted non-slip soles in addition to four-inch heels. One of which I’d broken. Only I could manage to break a heel on an ankle boot.

My name should have been Grace.

“I always wanted to know what it would be like to serve drinks to men who can kill me with a look.” I shrugged. “I’m not sure what you want me to say.”

“I want the truth, Mercy, and you’re going to give it to me if I have to wring your neck to get the words out of you.”

He’d remembered my name, and hearing him say it set my heart on fire. That was the truth, but surely he’d loathe hearing it from me.
